Charles Grubb Helped County Get Courthouse

Charles M. Grubb, a Morgan County native, was instrumental in obtaining a new courthouse for Washington County, according to Andrews’ History published in 1902.

Grubb, born March 11,1829, a son of Albert G. and Elizabeth (McCarty) Grubb, was a carpenter and bridge builder for a number of years as a resident of Beverly.

Albert G. was born in Delaware and in 1843 moved with his family to Washington county where he was a carpenter and farmer until he died in 1877 at 75. He married Elizabeth McCarty , who was born in Loudoun County, Va., and died 1858. They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The Grubbs had 11 children. Besides Charles M., they were Mary J., Elizabeth, who married J. W. Fouts: Charles M., Louis L., Beverly: Albert G., Lucelia, Goodsil B., James (who went to Missouri), Sarah, Louisa and Josephine.

Charles M. enlisted in 1861 as a private in Co. F., 18^th Regt., Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and served three years and three months. Shortly after he entered the service, he was made company orderly, then rose to second lieutenant and finally to first lieutenant.

For a time he was detailed as aide-de-camp on the staff of the brigade commander. He participated in the following engagements: Stone River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge.

He was mustered out at Columbus Nov. 9, 1864, and returned home where he engaged in carpentering and bridge building.

A Republican, he served as county commissioner. One of his last acts in that capacity was helping locate the site of the new $200,000 courthouse, he was instrumental in getting for the county.

Grubb on Dec. 9, 1852, married Susan F. Dutton, who was born in Aurelius Twp. August 1829, a daughter of Hason and Elizabeth Dutton. They has five children: Albert H., Beverly: Charles W., Havana, Ill.: Clara E., Frank F., carpenter in Marietta: and Ernest C., a carpenter of Lincoln, Ill. Mrs. Grubb died July 20, 1894.

Grubb was a member of Mount Moriah Lodge 37, F&AM, and the chapter. He also was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and was commander several times.

Additional information just received shows Lt. Grubb returning to the regiment on November 11, 1863, after being wounded at Chickamauga.(David Shott diary)
