FRANCIS COX
Nelsonville

Francis Marion Cox, eldest son of Daniel L. and Credellia Cox, was born at Nelsonville, O., March 18, 1843, and died February 12, 1920, aged 76 years, 10 months and 24 days.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted as a private in Co. G, 18th O.V.I., at Nelsonville, O., a member of Capt. Cable's company, and they are all that are in this locality who were members of that company. Discharged August, 1864, by reason of disability, having served two years and ten months. He was a brave soldier and an exemplary citizen. Joined Phil Kearny Post No. 38, Dept. of Ohio G.A.R., May 13, 1901. Was ever a faithful member always ready to assist in time of need, and will be sadly missed by his comrades. He filled several offices of the Post, and was surgeon at the present time. He has a commendable record of a soldier, having participated in the following engagements: Alabama Tavern, Athens, in Tennessee, Stone River, Davis Crossroads, Four Days Tallahassee Campaign, Chickamauga, Brown's Gap and Missionary Ridge. He was a well known and respected citizen of this community having lived almost his entire life in Nelsonville. Loyalty and patriotism were his chief characteristics.

All of his family have preceeded him except one brother, Leslie, who lives near this city.
