Jeremiah Bean, Co C

 

Jeremiah Bean was born in Hardy County, Virginai in 1838to John and Mary Ann(Leavy) Bean. Sometime before the Civil War he moved to Athens County, Ohio. Jeremiah enlisted in Company C. of the 18th Ohio on August 19, 1861. He was 23 years old at the time. Sometime during his service, he was made Sergeant of Company C. He was mustered out of the army on November 9, 1864 with most of the men from the regiment at Camp Chase, Ohio near Columbus. His brother, Edmond Bean, also served in the Civil War in the 3rd Ohio in many of the same places as Jeremiah.

After the war, he married Jennie J. King on March 18, 1865. They were blessed with four sons and a daughter. Parnill was born in 1865, Whitfield in 1867, Herbert in 1867, Claude in 1885, and Earl whose birthdate is unknown.

According to the obituary that appeared in the Athens Messenger on July 7, 1917, Jeremiah died at his son's home on Greenbranch about 2 miles from Guysville in the afternoon hours of cancer. Mr. Bean was 80 years old and was preceeded in death by his wife some years earlier. He was buried with Masonic honors in the Bean family cemetery.
