Biography of

Hiram M. Frost, Co F, B

Hiram M. Frost was born in 1849. Not much is known about him until he enlisted in the 18th Ohio as a Private on March 24, 1864. He was originally assigned to Company F, but was transferred to Company B. Oddly enough, his age is listed as 18 on the Roster of Ohio Troops in the Civil War, but his real age was 14. That would have made him the one of if not the youngest men in the Regiment. He was mustered out of Company F on October 9, 1865 at the end of the war. After the war, his connection to other members of the Regiment is remarkable.

After the war, he married Lydia Kincade on January 12, 1868 in Athens County, Ohio. They had one son, George Frost, who was born in 1869. Something happened to Lydia, it appears, as he married the widow of Ranselier Miles on January 14, 1873. To this union was born three children. They were John W. Frost born 1874, Albert born 1877, and Jennie born in 1879. Hiram worked and lived in Athens County in the 1880's as a farmer. Sarah died on November 15, 1892. The grieving widower wasted no time in that he married the former wife of Charles C. C. Ellis, Mary C. Sivill on December 19, 1892, barely a month after the death of Sarah. Charles Ellis was another former member of the 18th Ohio. Charles and Mary Sivill's daughter Frances Ellis Miles (unsure of which Miles she married) died in 1903, leaving three daughters under the age of 9. Hiram and Mary must have taken them in since two of the girls are living with them according to the 1910 census.

Hiram was married a fourth and final time to Mary Woodruff who died in 1925. Hiram now began living with his son, Albert, in Dayton, Ohio. He died three years later on November 1, 1930. He is buried in the National Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.
